Why Companies Move from Tally to ERPNext

Tally is excellent software — for what it was built to do. Most companies hit its ceiling between ₹10Cr and ₹50Cr revenue.

What does ERPNext do that Tally cannot?
Tally excels at accounting, GST, TDS, and basic stock management. ERPNext adds the full operational layer: manufacturing with BOM, work orders, and MRP; multi-warehouse with bin-level tracking; full HR and payroll with leave, attendance, and statutory compliance; CRM with sales pipeline and quotations; purchase approval workflows with multi-level authorisation; quality control and inspection checklists; project and task management; customer portal; helpdesk with SLA tracking; mobile app for field operations; and a REST API for integrating with third-party tools. For a company with more than 10 employees and any operational complexity, ERPNext replaces 5–8 separate tools that Tally users typically cobble together with spreadsheets.
🏭
Manufacturing
BOM, work orders, job cards, MRP, subcontracting, shop floor dashboards. Tally has none of this.
👥
Full HR & Payroll
Attendance, leave, salary processing, PF/ESI/PT, payslips, Form 16 — all in one system.
📦
Multi-Warehouse
Multiple locations, bin-level tracking, inter-warehouse transfers, reorder alerts.

CRM & Sales
Lead pipeline, quotations, sales orders, customer portal, email integration.
Approval Workflows
Purchase order approvals, expense claims, leave requests — with email notifications.
📱
Mobile App
Field sales, delivery, shop floor, attendance — all on Android and iOS.
🔌
API & Integrations
REST API connects ERPNext to Razorpay, Shiprocket, WooCommerce, WhatsApp, and more.
🌍

Manage multiple group companies with inter-company transactions and consolidated reporting.
☁️
Cloud & Remote
Access from anywhere — no VPN, no Tally server, no per-seat desktop licences.

What Gets Migrated from Tally

Quantbit's migration process is structured to get your data into ERPNext cleanly, without losing a single ledger or outstanding payment.

✓ Migrated Fully
  • Chart of Accounts (ledger → ERPNext account mapping)
  • Customer master (name, GSTIN, address, credit limit)
  • Supplier master (name, GSTIN, payment terms)
  • Item / stock master (HSN code, UOM, stock group)
  • Closing stock as opening stock entry
  • Outstanding receivables (customer-wise)
  • Outstanding payables (supplier-wise)
  • Bank account opening balances
  • Tax configuration (CGST, SGST, IGST, CESS, TDS)
  • Employee master (for HR module)
→ As Opening Balance
  • Historical P&L (as Journal Entry summary per period)
  • Accumulated depreciation for fixed assets
  • Serial/batch opening stock (with cost)
  • Historical purchase orders (if in progress)
  • Advance payments (customer/supplier)
  • Payroll arrears and pending dues
  • TDS payable as of go-live date
  • GST input credit balance (ITC ledger)

* Historical transactions (invoices, vouchers, payments) prior to go-live typically remain in Tally for reference. ERPNext starts fresh from go-live date with opening balances. This is standard practice for any ERP migration and keeps your new system clean and fast.

The Tally to ERPNext Migration Process

Quantbit's structured 6-phase migration ensures zero disruption to GST filing and operations.

1
Discovery & Data Audit
We extract your Tally data via XML/ODBC, audit ledger structure, identify customisations (TDL scripts), and map your chart of accounts to ERPNext's default CoA. We flag any data quality issues before migration begins — not after.
1–2 weeks
2
ERPNext Configuration
Set up company, fiscal year, chart of accounts, GST configuration (GSTIN, tax templates, HSN/SAC mapping), warehouses, cost centres, and user roles. India payroll statutory components (PF, ESI, PT) configured for your state.
1–2 weeks
3
Master Data Migration
Customer, supplier, item, employee, and bank account masters imported from Tally XML. GSTIN validated, HSN codes mapped, payment terms configured. Item-warehouse mapping set up for opening stock.
1–2 weeks
4
Opening Balances & Outstanding Entry
Closing trial balance from Tally entered as ERPNext opening Journal Entry. Outstanding invoices entered as opening Accounts Receivable and Payable — so your aging reports are accurate from day one. Closing stock entered as stock reconciliation.
1–2 weeks
5
User Training & Parallel Run
Key users trained on ERPNext modules. Parallel run for 2–4 weeks: new transactions entered in ERPNext, reconciled against Tally. Trial closing of month-end in both systems to validate matching totals before full cutover.
2–4 weeks
6
Go-Live & Tally Archival
Cutover at financial year start or month start. Tally kept read-only for historical reference. ERPNext is now your system of record. First GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filed from ERPNext within 30 days of go-live with Quantbit support.
Go-live
Should I migrate from Tally at the start of a financial year?
April 1 (start of Indian financial year) is the ideal cutover date — it gives you a clean start with no split-year reconciliation, simplifies GSTR-1 annual reconciliation, and means your first year's data in ERPNext covers a full FY. The second-best option is the start of any GST quarter (July 1, October 1, January 1). Avoid mid-quarter cutover where possible. Quantbit plans migration timelines backward from your target go-live date.

Tally to ERPNext Migration FAQ

Questions we hear from every Tally user considering the switch.

Can I migrate my Tally data to ERPNext? +
Yes. Tally exports data in XML format (via ODBC or TDL export). Quantbit's migration process maps Tally ledgers to ERPNext Chart of Accounts, transfers party masters (customers, suppliers), item masters, opening balances, and outstanding receivables/payables. GST registration, HSN codes, and tax templates are remapped to ERPNext's GST configuration.
What is the difference between Tally Prime and ERPNext? +
Tally Prime is a desktop-first accounting and GST compliance tool — excellent for bookkeeping, GST filing, and basic inventory. ERPNext is a full cloud ERP with manufacturing, HR, CRM, project management, helpdesk, payroll, purchase approvals, quality control, multi-warehouse, and a REST API for integrations. Companies typically switch from Tally when they outgrow bookkeeping-only software and need operations management, approval workflows, and real-time visibility across departments.
How long does Tally to ERPNext migration take? +
A typical Tally-to-ERPNext migration for an SME (20–100 users) takes 6–16 weeks total including implementation. The data migration component itself takes 2–4 weeks. The overall project timeline depends on business complexity, number of warehouses, payroll structure, and custom reporting requirements.
Will my GST data from Tally transfer to ERPNext? +
Your configuration (GSTIN, HSN/SAC codes, tax templates) is fully migrated. Historical GST returns remain in Tally for reference — ERPNext takes over from the go-live date, and your first GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B are filed from ERPNext within 30 days of cutover with Quantbit support.
What does Tally not do that ERPNext does? +
Tally is strong at: accounting, GST, TDS, and basic stock management. ERPNext adds: manufacturing (BOM, work orders, MRP), multi-warehouse with bin-level tracking, full HR and payroll, CRM and sales pipeline, purchase approval workflows, quality control, project management, customer portal, helpdesk, REST API integrations, and a mobile app for field operations. For a company with more than 10 employees and operational complexity, ERPNext replaces 5–8 separate tools that Tally users cobble together with spreadsheets.
Is ERPNext better than Tally for a trading company? +
For a trading company with ₹10Cr+ revenue, ERPNext significantly outperforms Tally: multi-warehouse stock management, reorder point alerts, purchase order approval workflows, sales quotation to invoice workflow, customer credit limits, batch and serial tracking, landed cost calculation, and real-time profitability by item or customer. Tally handles the accounting; ERPNext handles the entire business operation.
